Hawaii beats UC San Diego in volleyball

The lowly UC San Diego men's volleyball team gave Hawaii a run for its money Friday night before falling to the Warriors, 38-36, 37-39, 30-20, 30-21.

Matt Carere had 21 kills to lead the Warriors to their 16th consecutive victory. Lauri Hakala added 20 kills for UH and teammate Matt Bender had 15.

Jon Daze had 20 kills to lead UC San Diego, which has won only one of the 26 matches it has played this season. It is 0-19 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Hawaii, ranked No. 3 in the CSTV/AVCA Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, improved to 20-4 and 16-3.
