The Kaimuki observatory opened on April 8, 1910, coinciding with the arrival of Halley's Comet in Hawai'i skies. It was the first observatory in Hawai'i.

1927: The Honolulu Academy of Arts opens on the site of the former home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cooke.

1968: Violence that flared after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. hits more Mainland cities; sniper fire is reported in Baltimore.

1983: Some 150 Royal Gardens residents evacuate for the third time in as many months as a flow of lava from the Kilauea eruption works its way down the steep slopes of the rural subdivision. The flow destroys four structures.

1996: The Rev. Paul Osumi, whose column "Today's Thought" ran in The Advertiser for more than 38 years, dies at the age of 90. Today's Thought was a tightly written chestnut providing people with simple hope, wisdom and optimism.

2002: Chicago-based General Growth, owner of Ala Moana Shopping Center, agrees to buy the Ward retail complex for $250 million.
