UH volleyball now ranked No. 2

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i volleyball team has ascended one spot, to No. 2, in this week's Molten/Volleyball top-10 rankings.

UC Irvine (25-3) remains No. 1.

The rankings, chosen by the editors of Volleyball Magazine, reflect the standings in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the strongest of the NCAA's three leagues.

UH actually moved into second place in the MPSF three weeks ago, but still trailed BYU in the national rankings.

UH coach Mike Wilton said the Warriors' No. 2 ranking is fitting.

"I think you can take the order of the top seven or eight teams (in the MPSF) and use it as your national guide," Wilton said.

The Warriors have won 17 in a row, a streak preceding Valentine's Day, and clinched at least the No. 2 seed in the MPSF postseason tournament, whose winner earns an automatic berth in the NCAA final four.

They close the regular season with matches against No. 3 Brigham Young Friday and Saturday in the Stan Sheriff Center.

Bill Kauffman, who collects the votes for the CSTV/AVCA top-15 poll, said the Warriors are expected to move up to No. 2. Sixteen Division I and II head coaches vote on the CSTV/AVCA poll, which will be released Monday afternoon.
