Kalaniana'ole Highway rush-hour crash kills woman

Advertiser Staff

A collision during morning rush-hour traffic on Kalaniana'ole Highway in East O'ahu killed a 40-year-old Honolulu woman and left a teenage Honolulu boy critically injured.

Police said the two-car collision took place at 6:50 a.m. near where the highway intersects with East Hind Drive.

The woman driver and her teenage passenger were in a Toyota that pulled out of a driveway and into the path of a Mazda driven by a 26-year-old 'Aiea man, police said.

Both the woman and teenager were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The woman was later pronounced dead. The driver of the other car declined medical treatment at the scene.

Police said while speed may have been a factor in the accident, alcohol was not.

The morning contra-flow lane was closed down, adding to the traffic congestion in the highway's west-bound lanes for several hours.
