Multi-sport star Onosai switches to UCLA

Word of Life senior Careena Onosai has accepted a full-ride scholarship offer to join the UCLA track and field program, rescinding her previous oral commitment to play volleyball for the University of Hawai'i, according to her father, Joe Onosai.

Careena Onosai, the defending state champion in both the discus and shot put, announced last year that she planned to walk on to UH's women's volleyball and track and field programs.

"We felt as a family that her future was brighter in throwing," said Joe Onosai, a former standout football player for UH. "And UCLA is the top throwing school in the nation that has produced more Olympians than any other college."
