Schofield Barracks soldier from Alaska killed in Iraq

Advertiser Staff

A 22-year-old Schofield Barracks soldier was killed in Iraq on Sunday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee during convoy operations, the Pentagon said.

Pfc. Joseph I. Love, of North Pole, Alaska, died in Balad, about 50 miles north of Baghdad. Love was a member of the 84th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy).

Nearly 500 soldiers with the 84th deployed in December to Iraq for a year. About half the soldiers were with the unit when it returned from Iraq in January of 2005.

The 84th Engineers build homes, schools, roads, freshwater lines, concrete blast barriers and razor wire barricades. During its previous deployment the battalion completed more than 300 projects in Iraq.
