APRIL 11


On April 11, 1896, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser published that afternoon's program for the Hawaiian Band's concert at Emma Square.

1877: Lili'uokalani is proclaimed heir to the throne.

1930: After heavy rains in the Ko'olau, a roaring wall of water sweeps down Palolo Valley, tearing down retaining walls and demolishing homes. A young woman is swept to her death despite neighbors' efforts to save her.

1932: The prosecution begins its case in the Massie trial.

1933: The first shipment of Japanese beer arrives in Honolulu and is sold out on the first day. It costs 40 cents a quart.

1950: Five members of the Honolulu Board of Supervisors ask fellow supervisor Richard Kageyama to step down. Kageyama had testified before the House Un-American Activities hearing the previous day that he had been a member of the communist party. Kageyama does resign as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.

1951: President Truman fires Army Gen. Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander of allied forces in Korea.

1962: A federal court orders an end to the West Coast shipping strike and an 80-day cooling-off period. Gov. Quinn asks Island residents to do their part by continuing to purchase only the goods they need and not to stockpile.

1968: More than 4,000 Hawai'i National Guardsmen and Army reservists are called up for duty in Vietnam amid criticism that Hawai'i's callup is disproportionately large for the size of the state. Hawai'i's troops comprised 17 percent of the total called up nationally.

1969: The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents votes 5-2 to reinstate Oliver Lee as an assistant professor of political science without tenure and on probation for one year. Lee was fired two years earlier on the grounds that he had acted irresponsibly in his role as faculty adviser to a radical student group.

1973: Circuit Judge Masato Doi finds the Hawaii State Teachers Association in contempt of court for striking. He fined the union $100,000 plus $10,000 for each working day of the strike starting April 3.

1974: A tour plane crashes on the slopes of Mauna Loa, killing all 11 on board.

2002: The Insiko 1907 is seen drifting about 400 miles south of O'ahu raising hopes the dog left on board might still be alive. The crew of the crippled tanker had been rescued on April 2.
