1912: Queen Lili'uokalani wields a silver trowel to help lay the cornerstone for Lili'uokalani School in Kaimuki. It was the first semiofficial meeting of the former queen and former Republic of Hawai'i President Sanford B. Dole. As the queen was escorted to the grounds of the school, the crowd stood and remained standing until the queen was seated. The crowd also stood when she took part in the ceremony and when she was escorted back to her car.
1928: Passengers as well as pilots must be free from the effects of intoxicating liquor before permitted to board any plane at any airport or landing field, according to a clause in Territorial airport rules and regulations tentatively drafted by the aeronautical commission.
1945: President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies of a cerebral hemorrhage and Harry S. Truman is sworn in as the nation's 32nd president.
1945: Princess David Kawananakoa (Abigail Campbell Kawananakoa) dies at the age of 63.
1955: Public health officials announce that the Salk vaccine is effective against polio, and first- and second-grade pupils across the country are scheduled to be the first to receive the vaccine.
1962: Safeway will be the first tenant in the new Manoa Shopping Center, the developer announces.
1990: Bernard Akana, the buoyant, smiling politician who labored in near anonymity for 20 years before his stunning upset victory in the 1989 race for Big Island mayor, dies at the age of 70. He said he had no desire to be a "slick politician" or a "high mucka-mucka."
2001: The crew of a U.S. surveillance plane that had been held by China arrives in Hawai'i for two days of debriefing.
