Traffic fatality identified

The medical examiner's office yesterday identified the motorist who died Monday after being injured in a two-car collision in 'Aina Haina as Dana Alama-Yap, 40.
Police said Alama-Yap pulled out of a driveway onto Kalaniana'ole Highway's eastbound lanes and into the path of a 1995 Mazda 626 sedan. The collision was reported to police at 6:29 a.m. Alama-Yap died at The Queen's Medical Center.
Alama-Yap's death is O'ahu's 29th traffic fatality and the state's 51st in 2006.
The medical examiner is awaiting confirmation of the identity of a 39-year-old woman killed Saturday in a van crash in La'ie before releasing her name while Big Island police have not yet released the name of a 63-year-old man killed Friday in a North Kohala crash.

FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF FOR NAKAMURA
Gov. Linda Lingle has ordered state flags at state and county buildings to be flown at half-staff today from sunup to sundown in honor of former State Board of Education member and former Honolulu Police Chief Michael Nakamura, who died April 1.
Services for Nakamura will be held today at Mililani Mortuary's Mauka Chapel in Waipi'o. Visitation is set for 4:30 p.m.; services will follow at 6:30 p.m.
KAIMUKI
WATER CREWS FINISH REPAIR JOBS
Water service was restored at 1 p.m. yesterday in Kaimuki after Board of Water Supply crews completed two emergency repairs that cut off water service about 8:30 Monday night.
Crews repaired a valve at Harding and 10th avenues that had been damaged by a contractor. The valve was on an 18-inch main. About 100 customers were affected by that repair job.
Another crew repaired a 6-inch water line that broke Monday.
KAHUKU
FUNDS RELEASED FOR SCHOOL FIELD
Gov. Linda Lingle has released $400,000 for the design of improvements to Kahuku High & Intermediate School's athletic field.
The money will be used to assess various options to address frequent flooding problems and to design the project, according to a press release from the governor's office.
The total project is estimated to cost $4.2 million and is expected to be completed by September 2007.

WAIPOULI MAN, 56, REPORTED MISSING
Kaua'i police are asking for the public's help in finding Stephen A. Haray, 56, of Waipouli, who was reported missing after failing to show up for work Friday at Plantation Hale.
Police said Haray last contacted friends on Thursday. He owns a 2006 white, four-door Honda Accord, license plate number KYC-064. Haray is 6 feet, about 240 pounds, with blue eyes, a short beard and a receding hairline and wears glasses.

LIFEGUARD COURSE FOR YOUTH 13-17
The city's Ocean Safety Division and Hawaiian Lifeguard Association are accepting registration and reservations for the summer Junior Lifeguard Program. Applicants, ages 13 to 17, must have strong swimming skills and a desire to learn about ocean safety. This is not a learn-to-swim program.
The five-day course covers an introduction to identifying ocean hazards, ocean and surf rescue techniques, emergency first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation training. Seven different sessions are scheduled, starting June 5-9 at Ala Moana, Kalama and 'Ehukai beach parks.
Other sessions at Ala Moana, Kalama, 'Ehukai, Waimanalo (Sherwood's) and Poka'i Bay will be held June 12-16, June 19-23, June 26-30, July 3-7, July 10-14 and July 17-21.
There's no cost but a donation of $25 payable to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association is suggested.
Registration and reservations are being accepted until June 1 online at www.myjuniorguards.com.
