O'ahu residents can get recovery help

 •  Inouye praises resiliency since Windward flooding

Residents and businesses who suffered property damage during recent flooding on O'ahu can get information about assistance programs this week at two resource centers.

State and county civil defense officials will operate Disaster Assistance and Recovery Centers at the following dates and places:

  • Tomorrow, noon to 8 p.m., Japanese Cultural Center, 2454 S. Beretania St.

  • Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Waimanalo District Park, 41-477 Hihimanu St.

Representatives from state, county and civilian agencies such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army and Aloha United Way will provide information about assistance available under the state disaster declaration.

Also yesterday, Gov. Linda Lingle asked President Bush to declare a major disaster for Hawai'i as a result of the heavy rains and flooding over the past two months.

A presidential disaster declaration would make available additional grants, loans, services and programs to affected residents. In a letter to the president, Lingle said many communities sustained "repeated flooding" and that "mud, rock and debris have rendered some public and private property virtually useless until they can be cleaned up."

Lingle estimated that it would cost $50 million to address the problems.
