University of San Francisco senior right-hander Patrick McGuigan earned his second West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor of the season for the week of April 2 to 9.

The 2002 Mid-Pacific graduate pitched a six-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks as the Dons beat No. 22 Pepperdine, 2-0, Sunday. McGuigan pitched his third complete game of the season to improve to 8-1.

MORE BASEBALL

  • Sacramento State senior outfielder Jim Strombach (Moanalua '02) hit a two-run double in the top of the 12th inning to spark a six-run rally and a 12-8 victory over New Mexico State Sunday.

    Strombach batted 3 for 5 with two RBIs, two doubles and one run. He batted .583 (7 for 12) against the Aggies with seven RBIs, four runs, three doubles and two stolen bases.

    SOFTBALL

  • Tennessee freshman middle infielder Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05 from Wahiawa) hit her second career home run in a 10-2 win over East Tennessee State on April 5.

  • Missouri Valley College junior shortstop Loke Lastimosa (Kailua '03 of Waimanalo) hit four home runs in six games at the SCAD Smash Hit Tournament, March 12 to 16, in Savannah, Ga.

    Other players from Hawai'i on the MVC roster are junior first baseman Ashley Tone (Maui High '02 of Kihei) and senior first baseman Cassie Chun-Ming (Kaiser '02 of Ho-nolulu).

    WOMEN'S GOLF

  • Stanford junior Jenna Seki (Punahou '03 of Salt Lake) tied for fifth in the Peg Barnard California Collegiate at the par-71, 5,985-yard Stanford Golf Course.

    Seki, competing as an individual, shot 74-72—146 in the tournament that concluded Sunday.

    Stanford freshman Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) tied for seventh with 76-71—147.

    Oregon State senior Leah Whiting (Waiakea of Hilo, 78-80—158), Long Beach State sophomore Kira Murashige (Waiakea of Hilo, 79-79—158) and Portland State freshman Kayla Morinaga (Sacred Hearts '05 of Waipahu, 80-78—158) tied for 49th. Southern California freshman Shelcie Takenouchi (Kaua'i of Lihu'e) finished in a tie for 76th (167).

  • Puget Sound junior Emily Lau (Iolani '03) placed second at the Northwest Conference Spring Classic at the par-72, 5,960-yard Wildhorse Golf Course in Mission, Ore.

    Lau shot 79-90—169 at the tournament that concluded April 2. She earned an NWC Athlete of the Week honorable mention nod.

    WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • UC Irvine freshman Heidi Kaloi (Kamehameha '05) is 12-3 on the year in singles, mostly at the No. 5 position.

    She defeated Cal Poly's Sheila Lewis, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 4 slot Sunday.

    UCI sophomore Jessica Broadfoot (Punahou '04) beat Shannon Brady, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 6 match.

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Southwestern Oregon Community College freshman point guard Tammie Andres (Maryknoll '05 of Kapolei) was named to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Southern Region All-Freshman Team.

    COMMITMENTS

  • Guard India Soo, who played basketball for Idaho State in the 2004-05 season, will play for Western Washington next season, according to a release from the school.

    Soo, a 2004 Kamehameha graduate, played in all 29 games as a freshman at Idaho State, making 21 starts and averaging 5.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

  • Hilo senior Katrina Chong will play for the Loyola Marymount women's soccer team in the fall, according to her father, Curtis Chong.

  • Leilehua midfielder Daniel Phelps will play for the University of Washington men's soccer team in the fall. He joins Iolani goalkeeper Stephen Fung, whose signing was announced earlier.
