Several beaches to stay closed over Easter weekend

Advertiser Staff

Several Windward O'ahu beaches are expected to remain closed through the Easter weekend as a result of contaminated water from sewage spills, a Health Department official said today.

Warning signs remained posted from Waimanalo Beach Park through Bellows Beach Park and Wailea Point, as well as from Kane'ohe Beach Park through Kokokahi, said Kurt Tsue, a Department of Health spokesman.

In a related development, the city Parks and Recreation announced it was shutting down camping sites at Bellows Field Beach Park for the weekend.

The Health Department also continued to leave signs posted along all sections of the Ala Wai Canal, the Ala Wai Boat Harbor and Ala Wai Channel.

No postings remain on other islands, Tsue said.

Meanwhile, rough and large surf of 6 to 8 feet was continuing along east-facing shores of all islands, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong tradewinds over and to the east of the state are generating large and rough seas that are resulting in the higher surface, forecasters said.

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 2 p.m. Friday.

Beachgoers are being urged to stay out of the water and away from shorebreaks to avoid hazardous waves and strong rip currents.
