'Aina Haina students complain of pesticide odor

Advertiser Staff

Students from 'Aina Haina Elementary School were evacuated to a nearby field shortly after 1 p.m. today when a pesticide odor was detected and students began complaining of adverse symptoms, according to Greg Knudsen, a Department of Education spokesman.

About 50 students were taken to area hospitals for evaluation, according to Knudsen. Parents of those students were notified.

School is no longer in session, but students in the A-plus program are apparently still on campus. Fire and hazardous material personnel are on the scene.

The origin of the odor has been pinpointed as Aina Haina Shopping Center, across the street from the school, said Knudsen.

A school official declined to comment when contacted by The Advertiser.
