The price for a volcano trip is going up, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on April 13, 1910. A seven-day trip, including three nights at the Volcano House, cost $55.

1906: Machinery for the plant of the American Can Co. arrives on the Alameda. The plant was to have a capacity of 40,000 to 50,000 cans per day.

1920: The Prince of Wales visits Honolulu for a day. He was on board the battle cruiser Renown.

1944: Federal Judge Delbert E. Metzger rules that martial law is illegal and ceased to exist as of March 10, 1943. He releases Pearl Harbor worker Lloyd D. Duncan because Duncan was tried in a military court and Metzger found that the military governor had no authority over civilian matters.

1974: Church College of Hawaii announces that it will become a branch of Brigham Young University in the fall.

1984: Hawai'i's interisland airlines — Hawaiian, Aloha and Mid-Pacific — announce they will ban smoking on interisland flights beginning at the end of the month. Hawai'i would become the first state in which all airline passengers flew smoke-free intrastate.

1997: Tiger Woods, 21, makes golf history, becoming the youngest champion of The Masters in Augusta, Ga.
