UH award presented to Kotani

Sophomore guard Amy Kotani won the 2006 Ah Chew Goo Achievement Award at the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team banquet last night at the Waikiki Beach Marriott.

The program's most prestigious individual award is given to the player who attains basketball excellence through dedication, determination and perseverance.

Kotani, a Moanalua High graduate, went from unheralded walk-on to starting point guard this past season.

Other award winners: junior guard Janevia Taylor (Offensive Player of the Year, with a 12.3 scoring average), junior center Brittany Grice (Defensive Player of the Year, with 2.5 blocks per game) and senior forward Emily Helmly (Scholar-Athlete, with a 3.76 GPA).

IRONS PERFECT

Kaua'i's Andy Irons scored a perfect 10 in his first-round victory of the Rip Curl Pro yesterday at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia.

Despite suffering from flu-like symptoms, Irons executed five power turns and two floaters for the perfect score. He finished with a two-wave total of 17.83.

Fred Patacchia Jr. of O'ahu also won his first-round heat to advance with Irons directly to the third round.

In the elimination second round, wildcard Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani upset Australian Nathan Hedge, 13.67-9.94. Hedge was ranked No. 8 in the world in 2005.

Bruce Irons also advanced with a second-round victory.

WICHMANN LEADS

University of Hawai'i sophomore Annett Wichmann set four school records to take the lead after the first day of the California Invitational Multi-Events heptathlon yesterday at Azusa, Calif.

Wichmann set UH marks in the 100-meter hurdles (14.91 seconds), 200 (26.47), shot put (45-1/4) and point total (3,193) to take a 10-point lead on Michigan's Bettie Wade. Wichmann had the day's best mark in the shot put, tied for third in the high jump (5-5), and placed fifth in the 100 hurdles and 10th in the 200.
