Kaiser toughs it out to beat Kailua

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Neither Kailua shortstop Zach Akamine, left, nor center fielder Preston Nakata could come up with a flyball hit by a Kaiser player in the first inning. The Cougars scored six runs in the inning en route to an 11-5 O'ahu Interscholastic Association win.

Kaiser's Russell Sasaki scattered 11 hits in going the distance against Kailua. He struck out two and did not issue a walk as the Cougars triumphed, 11-5.

After running through a gauntlet of four tough O'ahu Interscholastic Association games in eight days, Kaiser is still tied for first place in the Eastern Division.

For now.

The Cougars defeated visiting Kailua, 11-5, yesterday to improve to 6-1 and keep pace with Moanalua, also 6-1. Kailua fell to 4-2, despite getting 11 hits off Kaiser starter Russ Sasaki.

"As long as we get the win, it's all good," said Sasaki, who finished a complete game with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Cougars jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first inning after sending 12 batters to the plate, with five hits, two errors, a walk and a hit batter. Colby Ho's two-run double was the big hit in the rally.

The Surfriders closed to 6-4 with three runs in the top of the third inning after four hits and an error, but Kaiser responded with three runs in the bottom half on Alex Talavera's two-run single and an RBI single by Jarryd Maeda.

The Cougars stretched the lead to 11-4 an inning later after Noel Okuma made it home on a delayed steal and Kahanu Chan drove home Ho with a single to left.

Kaiser learned not to take big leads for granted after leading Kalani 9-2 last Friday before the Falcons scored six runs in the sixth inning. The Cougars held on to win that one, 9-8.

"When we had that lead against Kalani, we played like we were losing, and even today Kailua looked like they had the momentum (after closing it to 6-4)," Kaiser coach Peter Ho said. "We told our guys to 'take control of the game,' and once they settled down, we were all right."

Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said errors and a lack of clutch hitting proved to be his team's downfall.

"Against a good team, you gotta play defense," Ishigo said. "We didn't do that, and Kaiser capitalized on our mistakes. They're a good hitting team. We had our chances, too, but we didn't hit when we had to."
