The April 15, 1897, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on activity at the racetrack in Kapi'olani Park.

1889: Father Damien, who gained worldwide fame for devoting his life to those with Hansen's disease, dies in Kalaupapa.

1909: Because the telephone system will be extended to the wireless station in Kahuku, telegrams can now be forwarded to Honolulu the same night they are received, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports.

1921: With its freshwater showers, cement floors, white enamel interior, mirrors and modern laundry equipment, the Moana Baths at Waikiki Beach have proven that bathers will patronize up-to-date bath houses rather than getting into their swimming togs at home, The Honolulu Advertiser reports. The newly renovated baths have locker rooms for men and changing rooms in the ladies' annex.

1924: The remains of chief Kamualii Kaaikuala and his wife are exhumed from their gravesite and moved to the Kawaiaha'o cemetery. The gravesite was in the path of the Ala Wai Canal, which was then being dug.

1925: Honolulu's first metered taxi service will begin in 10 days, officials of American Hawaiian Motors Co. announce.

1928: The Maunalani tract officially opens with 140 lots ranging in price from 10 cents to 35 cents a square foot.

1958: Gov. William Quinn says it is OK for Territorial workers to wear aloha shirts to work during the summer. Most of the department heads said male workers were still expected to wear coat and tie for special meetings.

1964: Now the former governor, Quinn says he is putting politics and his law practice behind him and accepts a job as executive vice president of the world's largest fruit cannery, Dole Corp.

1968: President Lyndon B. Johnson arrives in Hawai'i to meet with U.S. military leaders and South Korean President Park Chung-hee. LBJ would stay at the Kaiser estate in Portlock during his visit.

1990: U.S. Sen. Spark Matsunaga dies at the age of 73.

1991: U.S. District Judge David Ezra rules that O'ahu's 20-year-old ban on fixed outdoor political campaign signs is unconstitutional.

1992: The final piece of the giant mosaic mirror is lowered into place on the W.M. Keck Telescope on Mauna Kea, marking the completion of the world's largest telescope.
