In the April 17, 1862, Pacific Commercial Advertiser, H. Hackfeld & Co. advertised fabrics it had just received from Germany.

1869: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that Mr. D. Walsh, superintendent of the Hansen's disease settlement on Moloka'i, "has called on us to solicit aid towards the erection of a Protestant house of worship for those under his charge."

1908: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that "Samuel Clemens, known to all the world as Mark Twain, has accepted the offer of the Hawaii Promotion Committee to furnish him with a koa mantelpiece for his new house in Connecticut as a reminder of the days he spent in the islands and as an expression of the appreciation of the people of the islands of the good words the famous writer has penned concerning Hawaii."

1922: Nearly two miles of the new concrete road to the volcano is opened for traffic, from the 'Ola'a store to what colloquially is known as "Eleven Miles."

1935: Pan American's Clipper lands in Pearl Harbor at 8 a.m., completing a flight from Alameda, Calif., in 19 hours and 48 minutes. The plane had arrived off Honolulu at 7:04 a.m. but circled to accommodate the crowds and the welcoming committee for the historic first commercial flight from the Mainland to Hawai'i. The plane's speeds ranged from 115 to 160 miles per hour during the flight.

1941: Bishop Estate submits plans to the city Planning Commission for a master subdivision extending from 22nd Avenue in Kaimuki to Wailupe and from Kahala Avenue to Wai'alae Avenue.

1956: Thirteen major O'ahu supermarkets agree to halt loss-leader sales pending the outcome of a court test of Hawai'i's Unfair Trade Practices Act.

1967: The Civil Aeronautics Board authorizes direct flights between the West Coast and Hilo. Three U.S. airlines said they planned to offer up to 30 round-trip flights a week.

1970: The crippled Apollo 13 mission ends with a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
