Raiders rebound, beat Warriors

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

It took only 24 hours for Iolani School's girls basketball team to erase thoughts of its worst outing of the season.

The Raiders raced past visiting Kamehameha, 42-28, last night to avenge a surprising 41-33 loss to the Warriors on Tuesday. Iolani's victory helped it maintain a share of first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu with Punahou. Both teams are 5-1. Kamehameha fell to 3-3.

"Today we were ready," said Raiders forward Jamie Smith, a sophomore who scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals last night. "We were happy to get this second chance. We weren't ready last night, but today we woke up and stuck together as a team. We came back and showed our true colors."

Iolani also solved its shooting woes. The Raiders made just 11 of 51 field goals (21.6 percent) on Tuesday, including only 3 of 22 (13.6 percent) from 3-point range. Last night, they were 17 of 37 (46 percent) from the field, including 3 of 12 (25 percent) from beyond the arc.

But Warriors coach Clay Cockett said the biggest difference in Iolani's performance cannot be measured statistically.

"It was their intensity," Cockett said. "I thought they played with a lot more than us. They were ferocious and put a lot more pressure on us. The Iolani team you saw tonight, that's the one that should be No. 1 in the state."

The Raiders jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the game's first 4 1/2 minutes, with Smith scoring seven of those points. Kamehameha closed it to 15-13 early in the second period after Kaui Todd's layup, but Iolani finished the half with a 12-2 run sparked by 3-pointers from Kaz Masutani and Hennasea Tokumura.

Post players Smith and Keilyn Fujioka combined for 15 first-half points, compared to 10 points total in Tuesday's loss.

"They attacked our middle tonight, and they didn't exploit that last night," Cockett said.

Defensively, the Raiders picked up the tempo and applied almost full-court ball pressure. Warriors guard Tatri Lorenzo, who scored 18 points in Tuesday's win, was shut out in the first half and finished with six points on just two field goals.

The teams met on consecutive nights because last night's game was a makeup from the March 31 ILH opener that was postponed due to bad weather conditions in Honolulu.

"It worked out good for us, because we played at their gym first, and then at ours," Raiders coach Glenn Takara said. "(Kamehameha) had a real good game plan last night and they executed it well. But tonight we came to play mentally."
