Fishing boat loses power south of Big Island

By ELOISE AGUIAR

The Coast Guard has sent its cutter Kiska to help a fishing vessel

that lost power and stalled 143 miles south of

the Big Island.

The vessel Julie Irene called about 9 last night to report the boat was dead in the water, said Petty Officer Brooksann Epiceno.

A C-130 Hercules was sent to the scene to drop a radio to the crew but wasn't able to deliver it, Epiceno said.

The owner of the vessel has been notified and is on his way to the boat.

Another fishing vessel, the Hu Jue, has responded to the distress call and is assisting the Julie Irene with communications, Epiceno said.

The 87-foot Kiska is expected to reach the vessels by noon.
