Father Damien died on April 15,1889, but the news did not reach Honolulu until Saturday, April 20, when the steamer Mokolii arrived from Moloka'i. The next issue of The Pacific Commercial Advertiser printed the news on April 22, 1889.

1904: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that Honolulu is soon to have a new gas company.

1912: There are reports the Mediterranean fruit fly has been found on Kona coffee plantations and on Maui.

1924: A series of earthquakes in the Puna district create cracks several feet wide. Land in the Hilo side of the Puna Pavilion sinks 10 feet.

1929: Lawrence Judd is appointed governor of Hawai'i, succeeding Wallace Farrington.

1935: Pan American's Clipper completes its return flight to the Mainland, arriving in Alameda 21 hours after leaving O'ahu. Because of strong head winds, the flight landed 3› hours later than scheduled.

1954: Industrialist Henry J. Kaiser buys the 339,000-square-foot John Ena property adjoining the Ala Wai yacht basin for $750,000.

1973: Hawai'i's public school teachers return to the classroom, ending a strike that began April 1. The issues that caused the strike were still being negotiated before a mediation-arbitration expert.

1975: President Ford says America's involvement in the Vietnam War is over.

2001: Navy Cmdr. Scott Waddle is found guilty of dereliction of duty and negligent hazarding of the USS Greeneville on the day it accidentally sank a Japanese fishing vessel. He is allowed to retire with full benefits.
