UH volleyball falls to No. 4

The University of Hawai'i volleyball team dropped two places, to No. 4, in this week's CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Coaches' Top-15 Poll.

The Warriors had expected to remain at No. 2, despite Saturday's upset loss to UCLA in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs.

The Warriors had finished second in the MPSF's regular season with a 19-3 record, four more victories than third place Pepperdine and five more than Long Beach State. The MPSF is the strongest of the nation's three Division I-II volleyball conferences.

"That's just poor," UH coach Mike Wilton said of the voting. "But whatever. You can't control that."

UC Irvine remains No. 1.

Long Beach State, which defeated Brigham Young in the MPSF quarterfinals, ascended to No. 2, followed by Pepperdine, a first-round winner over Cal State Northridge.

UH swept two-match series from Long Beach State and BYU during the regular season. UH and Pepperdine split regular-season matches, but the Warriors hold the tie-breaker advantage based on the percentage of games won between the teams.

The Warriors also split a two-match series with UC Irvine, and hold the tie-breaker edge over the Anteaters.
