University of Hawai'i golfer Allie Rowe and volleyball player Alfee Reft were named winners of the 2006 Jack Bonham Awards as the school's top scholar-athletes.

The awards are presented to the top female and male athletes who "best exemplifies the ideals for which Jack Bonham stood for in the areas of athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character," according to the specifications listed on the UH Web site.

In 1974, Bonham, who was an assistant athletic director at UH at the time, was killed in a plane crash in American Samoa.

Rowe, a four-year letterwinner, will graduate next month with a degree in political science. She is the first female golfer to win the award in the program's 33-year history.

She is a member of the school's Student-Athletic Advisory Committee, and represents the school on on the Western Athletic Conference's student-advisory board.

Reft, a libero, will earn a degree in English next month. Last year, he was named Volleyball Magazine's Defensive Player of the Year. On Monday, he was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's All-Star second team.

This summer, Reft will train with the U.S. national volleyball team.
