Lingle OKs last $1.6M for Waimea purchase

Advertiser Staff

A $1.6 million appropriation that will assist in the purchase of Waimea Valley was signed by Gov. Linda Lingle yesterday, putting the transfer of the historic valley to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs one step closer to reality.

The state portion was the last piece of a $14 million purchase puzzle. The city put in $5 million, the U.S. Army (through the Trust for Public Lands) $3.5 million, OHA $2.9 million and the National Audubon Society $1 million.

OHA will manage the 1,875-acre property in partnership with the Audubon Society. The intent of the purchase is to preserve it as a natural area free from development.

Lingle said the sale will ensure the property will be "available to all the people of Hawai'i."

OHA board chairwoman Haunani Apoliona said she was pleased OHA was able to help "liberate this cherished parcel."
