Police Beat: Shoplifting suspect wields knife to escape

Police are searching for a man in his 30s who allegedly threatened a security guard with a knife while fleeing with merchandise stolen from a Pearl City store yesterday evening.

Police said a loss prevention officer for the store tried to detain the man at about 6:20 p.m. as a shoplifting suspect. The store employee said the man pulled out a knife, swung it at him, got into a car and drove off.

Police classified the incident as a first-degree robbery.

Five men robbed at gunpoint in home robbery

Police are investigating a report that five men, ranging in age from 23 to 71, were robbed at gunpoint Wednesday evening in Kaimuki.

The men told police that two men, one of whom was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, entered a home in Kaimuki about 10:30 p.m. and demanded money.

The men said the robbers took two lap-top computers and a wallet from the man who owned the home before fleeing the area.

Both of the robbers were described as being between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds.

Woman, 57, arrested for suspicion of abusing family member

A 57-year-old Moili'ili woman was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and abuse of a family or household member after she allegedly threatened a 17-year-old girl with a knife, hit the girl and pulled her hair repeatedly.

Police were sent to an apartment building at 555 University Avenue and made the arrest at about 9 p.m.

Man reports being shot at after traffic accident

Police opened an attempted murder case after a 32-year-old man reported being shot at on Kunia road near Waipahu about 10:10 p.m. Wednesday.

The man said he was involved in a traffic accident with another man on the H-1 Freeway and that he and the other driver pulled off onto Kunia Road.

He said he and the other man began to argue, when the other driver took out a gun a fired a shot at him. He said he last saw the other driver heading south on Kunia Road and taking the Waipahu off-ramp.

He described the other man as being in his 20s and said he was driving an older Acura hatchback, with gray primer paint, lowered suspension, tinted windows and a loud exhaust.

Suspect caught after trying to rob cab driver

A 37-year-old man was arrested in Moili'ili about 3:45 p.m. yesterday after he allegedly robbed a 59-year-old cab driver. Police said the two men stopped in their respective vehicles at a traffic light when the younger man attracted the attention of the older one.

The cabbie told police the younger man came up to him and placed his hand into his waistband, indicating that he was armed, and demanded money from the cab driver.

The cab driver fled and police were called. They located a suspect, who was identified by the cab driver and who was arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery. Police said no weapon was recovered.

Suspect driving older stolen car with new plates arrested

A 23-year-old woman was arrested in the Wai'anae area yesterday on suspicion of car theft after an undercover police officer spotted her driving a car that had be reported stolen.

Police said the officer noticed the woman about 12:45 p.m. driving an older Dodge car with paper license plates, normally found on new cars sold by automobile dealerships.

The undercover officer saw a woman, who knew from prior police contact, get into the car and drive off. When the officer caught up to the other car again it was parked on the side of Farrington Highway and unoccupied. The officer checked the car's vehicle identification number and learned a 45-year-old woman had reported it as stolen.

The officer found the woman he had seen drive away in the car a few minutes earlier and she allegedly told the officer she had been driving the car and knew that it was stolen. She was then arrested for unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Man who fell asleep in stolen rental car arrested

Police arrested a 26-year-old man early yesterday morning after finding him asleep in a car that had been reported stolen.

A police officer was sent to check on the car, parked illegally and fronting 296 Vineyard Blvd., about 2:55 a.m.

The officer reported finding the driver's door hanging open and a check of the car's license plates showed a car rental agency had reported the car stolen. The officer approached the car and found a man sleeping in the driver's seat and a glass pipe with residue in it on the passenger seat.

The officer then arrested the man on suspicion of detaining stolen property, third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
