Former NFL player Mel Tom, 64, dies

Advertiser Staff

Mel Tom, who played in the NFL despite never playing high school football, died Thursday. He was 64.

Born in Honolulu, Tom attended Maryknoll, which didn't have a football team back in the 1960s.

However, he was one of the state's best high school basketball players. He first played football in college and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He also played for the Chicago Bears.

Tom is the father of Logan, a volleyball star who attended Stanford and also played in the Olympics.
