Former UH stars had high standards

Advertiser Staff

Faster than a speeding Pisa Tinoisamoa?

More powerful than Kim Willoughby's first step?

Able to leap higher than Erin "Helicopter" Galloway for a single rebound?

This weekend's Hawai'i Speed and Quickness clinics is devoted to combine drills, and campers will be able to measure their skills against the marks left by former University of Hawai'i athletes.

Campers will receive charts with their results in the disciplines used at NFL combines, such as the 40-yard dash, pro-agility drill, and vertical and broad jumps. The campers can use the information to chart their progress through the years.

They also can see how they measure against past UH athletes. For instance, Tinoisamoa, now a linebacker for the St. Louis Rams, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.

Willoughby, who plays professional volleyball and basketball in Puerto Rico, had a vertical jump of 34.5 inches.

Galloway, who gained national attention for his spectacular dunks and blocks as a UH basketball player, had a vertical jump of 44 inches.

Those marks, as well as others by current UH athletes, are posted in the school's weight room and will be distributed to each camper.

The clinics are tomorrow and Sunday. Each session is $10, and includes coupons at Jamba Juice, Subway and Papa John's Pizza.
