Motorcyclist critically injured

A 26-year-old Hickam man was critically injured yesterday after the motorcycle he was driving lost control and went off the road in Kalaeloa.

At 5:15 p.m. yesterday the man was driving a blue, 2002 Yamaha R1 motorcycle at a "high rate of speed" on Coral Sea Road in Kalaeloa, police said. The man lost control of the motorcycle on a slight curve in the road and collided with a concrete barrier.

The 26-year-old was thrown off the motorcycle and landed in the road's grassy shoulder. He suffered head and other injuries, police said, and was transported to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

Speed was a factor and it is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash, police said. The man lives on Hickam Air Force base but it is unclear if he is in the Air Force, police said.
