Stanford stops UH for MPSF water polo title

Third-seeded Stanford defeated No. 5 Hawai'i, 6-3, on Sunday to capture the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo championship at Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine are 17-10 and are hoping to receive one of the three at-large berths to the NCAA Championship at UC Davis May 12 to 14. Stanford (22-4) received the league's automatic berth to the eight-team NCAA Championship.

Hawai'i's Kristy Bagnall and Iefke Van Belkum scored for UH, while Stanford got goals from Allison Gregorka and Katie Hansen in the first quarter.

The Cardinal took the lead on Lauren Silver's goal, but UH's Kelly Mason tied it at 1:37 in the second quarter. Christina Hewko put the Cardinal up for good with 41 seconds to go in the second period. 4-3.

Silver again scored in the third quarter and Nancy El-Sakkary added a goal in early in the fourth.

Hawai'i goalie Meike De Nooy made five saves. Stanford's Meridith McColl had seven stops, shutting out the Rainbow Wahine in the second half.
