Sewage bypass line completed in Waikiki

Advertiser Staff

A bypass line preventing another wastewater spill in Waikiki is now complete, Mayor Mufi Hannemann said today.

Running from Ala Wai Canal to Ala Moana Park, the 5,000-foot bypass will divert wastewater to the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant if there is another rupture in Waikiki's sewer system.

The bypass was submerged on July 17.

"If that aging sewer line in Waikiki breaks again, we won't face the scenario we had in March, when we had no choice but to divert wastewater into the Ala Wai Canal," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said.

The bypass serves as a safety net for Phase Two of the Beachwalk Wastewater Emergency Project.

During the second phase the city will build a pipe beneath the canal and Kaiolu Street that will connect to the Beachwalk Wastewater Pump Station makai of Kuhio Avenue.

The system will eventually connect to an existing network, bringing wastewater to the Sand Island plant.

The project is scheduled to be completed on Dec. 31, 2006.

Information is available through the project website at beachwalkbypass.com or by phone at 203-5777.

On March 24, 2006, the Waikiki force main broke after 42 days of rain, spilling 48 million gallons of sewage into the Ala Wai Canal.
