1899: The new fire station on the Makiki Plain is occupied for the first time. The Advertiser reported that nine men, a messenger boy, a fire engine and a hose cart moved into the station. The building was at the corner of Pi'ikoi and Wilder.
1905: Acting Gov. Atkinson declares war on large and offensive billboards in Hawai'i.
1923: After 18 years of opposition, the Consolidated Amusement Co. Ltd. surrenders to the pleas of the Outdoor Circle and announces it will no longer use billboards in Hawai'i. The Advertiser reported that "nothing now remains to mar Honolulu's scenery excepting the underwear and cigarette advertising."
