Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Lorens Chan won the boys age 12 division of the 2006 U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, July 27 to 29, at Pinehurst, N.C.

Chan shot 64-71-71—206 to finish six strokes ahead of Shunyat Hak of Beijing, China, who shot 67-73-73—212.

The three-day tournament — the world's largest for youngsters ages 4 to 12 — attracted 960 players from 47 states and 33 countries.

Players advanced to the seventh annual World Championship through qualifying events at the state level.

Younger age groups played nine-hole, par-36 courses and older age groups played 18-hole, par-72 courses that were shortened to age-appropriate distances.

VOLLEYBALL

UHH NAMES COACH

Former University of Hawai'i-Hilo All-American Carla Carpenter-Kabalis has been hired as UHH's interim women's volleyball coach, athletic director Kathleen McNally announced yesterday.

Carpenter-Kabalis replaces Julie Morgan, who resigned July 26 after coaching three years at UHH.

Carpenter-Kabalis twice served as an assistant coach on NAIA Hall of Fame coach Sharon Peterson's staff, helping the Vulcans to the 1988 NAIA national championship, and NCAA Division II regional championships in 1994 and 1995.

"Carla brings the sideline experience and a passion for the game and program that the volleyball program needs," McNally said. "We're hoping her connection to the past decades of Vulcan volleyball tradition will help preserve an NCAA competitive program. Carla brings enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to the volleyball position. It is exciting to be working with someone whose belief and dedication in the UHH volleyball program has extended over so many years."

Angie Andrade-Morioka and former Vulcan All-American Nalani Spencer-Viveiros will be Carpenter-Kabalis' assistants.

Carpenter-Kabalis has coached at Hilo High School, Waiakea High School and St. Joseph's School, and twice earned Big Island Interscholastic Federation Coach of the Year honors.

As a four-year player for UH Hilo, Carpenter-Kabalis was a member of one NAIA (1981) and two AIAW (1979, 1981) national championship teams. She was an NAIA all-American in 1981, an AIAW all-American in 1980 and 1981, an NAIA Hall of Fame inductee in 1989 and a Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame inductee in 1993. She was inducted into the Big Island Sports Hall of Fame this year.

UH MEN ADD HITTER

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team yesterday received a signed commitment from a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Paraguay.

Matias Brizuela faxed a copy of his athletics award agreement to the UH compliance department yesterday. The document is the equivalent of a letter of intent.

UH coach Mike Wilton praised Brizuela as a "powerful passer-hitter with a very good jump serve and good all-round game."

UH's two starting left-side hitters last year, José José Delgado and Matt Carere, graduated in May.

Brizuela is a member of Paraguay's Junior National team.

He will have five years to play four seasons.

His older brother, Mauricio Brizuela, is a former Pacific player.
