Struggling from the start, Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round of the 72-hole Weetabix Women's British Open at the in Lancashire, England.

The 16-year-old Punahou School senior, coming off a second-place finish at the Evian Masters in France last week, bogeyed the first three holes -- a par-3 and two par-4's. She also bogeyed the par-5 11th. She birdied the par-4 eighth hole and the par-4 18th.

Making her first appearance on Royal Lytham & St. Annes Course, Wie dropped shots at the first three holes with a weak chip at the first, finding a greenside bunker at the second and playing well short of the green with her second shot at the third.

Her consolation was a 5-iron second shot at 18 that left her ball close to the pin for her second birdie.

"My first few tee shots weren't the greatest," Wie said. "But it's long gone. I felt like I played well the back nine although I struggled a bit. I made a great birdie at the last hole and I feel like tomorrow is going to be another day."

Wie, who teed off Thursday morning (Wednesday night Hawaii time), is in danger of missing her first cut since the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic in 2003.

The field will be cut to the top 65 and ties after the second round. Wie's second-round tee time is 1:26 a.m. Friday.

Wie is not alone is her struggles. Karrie Webb, who defeated Wie by a stroke at the Evian Masters and is a three-time LPGA winner this year, shot a 4-over 76, which included an eight on the par-5 sixth.

Tour veteran Juli Inkster, 46, is the clubhouse leader after shooting a 6-under 66. Silvia Cavalleri and Maria Hjorth are three back after shooting 3-under 69s.

LPGA Tour veterans have won the three previous women's majors. Webb won the Kraft Nabisco Championship, Se Ri Pak took the LPGA Championship and Annika Sorenstam won the U.S. Women's Open.

Wie has finished in the top five in all six of her LPGA events this year.
