Hawai'i golfers Stephanie Kono, Kimberly Kim and Tadd Fujikawa all were part of winning teams yesterday as the West took a 19 1/2-11 1/2 lead over the East at the 17th American Junior Golf Association's Canon Cup in Lake Forest, Ill.

Kono and Kim posted a 4-and-3 win over their Eastern opponents Kristina Wong and Joy Kim.

Fujikawa teamed with Andrew Yu to roll by David Yujin and Tommy Chung Hao Mou, 6 and 5.

The annual event involves team match play competition featuring the 10 best male and female junior golfers from east of the Mississippi River against their counterparts from west.

Matches include four-ball, mixed-four-ball, foursomes, mixed-foursomes and singles.

Scoring is based on a points system with 50 total points available over the three days of competition. One point is awarded for each match won and half a point is given to each team for matches that end in a tie.

The competition ends today.

Bradley Shigezawa and Matthew Ma each shot 7-under 137 over 36 holes yesterday in the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at the Pearl Country Club course.

Shigezawa and Ma earn berths to the national tournament, Aug. 19 to 27, at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Pierre-Henri Soero (138) and Spencer Shishido (143) are the alternates.

Kaua'i's Casey Watabu, who won the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, earned an automatic berth.
