Business briefs: ML&P loses $2.6M in 2nd quarter

Advertiser Staff

Maui Land & Pineapple Company Inc. reported a net loss of $2.6 million, or 36 cents a share, in the second quarter, compared to net income of $6.5 million, or 90 cents a share for the same three months a year earlier.

Second-quarter revenues fell to $33.6 million, a 34 percent decline from $51.2 million a year earlier. The company said the drop was due to lower revenues from its agriculture and community development divisions. The declines were partially offset by increased revenues from the resort segment.

"Second quarter results largely reflect the impact of modernizing and re-sizing the Maui Pineapple unit combined with a reduction in land sales in our Community Development segment," said David Cole, chairman, president and chief executive officer.

"The resort segment experienced improved revenue growth, but profits were impacted by fewer golf rounds and room nights than forecast in connection with the closing of the Kapalua Bay Hotel."

Mana Hawaii opens at Waikiki Beach Walk mall

Mana Hawaii, a joint venture of five locally owned businesses, is the latest tenant of Outrigger Enterprises Group's Waikiki Beach Walk retail complex.

The 1,600-square feet store will sell locally-made items, including books, artwork, woodwork, clothing and ukulele. It will also offer cultural activities like hula lessons, sessions on lomilomi massage, weaving and Hawaiian language lessons.

Mana Hawaii is a joint venture by Native Books, Na Mea Hawaii, Original Hawaiian Traders/The Hula Supply CEnter, Raku International/Ukulele House and The Lomi Shop. They are all equal partners in the store's parent company, Kauhale LLC.

"Mana Hawaii is a truly unique way to connect visitors to the Hawaiian community," said David Carey, President and CEO of Outrigger Enterprises Group. "We are honored to have a Hawaiian venture as part of Waikiki Beach Walk and we look forward to giving our guests the opportunity to learn about what makes Hawaii such a special place."

The Waikiki Beach Walk retail complex is scheduled to open by the end of the year.
