Waipio Little Leaguers lose opener, 1-0

Advertiser Staff

The Waipio Little League team, trying to duplicate what West O'ahu accomplished last year, lost its first game 1-0 to Arizona Friday.

The Little League West Regional for 11- and 12-year-olds is being played at San Bernardino, Calif.

In the bottom of the sixth and final regularly scheduled inning, Waipio ace Marcus Yoshii walked lead-off batter Scott Kingery,

After striking out Shaun Chase, Yoshii walked another batter. Sam Kingery then hit a ground-rule double to left to win it.

Yoshii struck out 11 in 5 1/3 innings. The lefthander walked three.

Until then, no Arizona runner had reached third.

Waipio's bats were just as silent. It was limited to just one hit — a first-inning double by Tyler Tokunaga — and no runner reached third.

Chase, who struck out nine, was the winning pitcher.

Waipio, which was moved this year into the highly competitive West Regional from the Northwest Regional, will face Southern California champion Northridge Saturday in pool play.

The West Region winner advances to the World Series in Williamsport, Pa., site of the championship since 1959.
