Tips to help with first grade

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The right blend of structure and independence can help a student conquer first grade, the first year of college or the first day of work. But let's concentrate on first grade as a start. These parent-child activities can help:

  • Work on letter-sound recognition and reading skills.

  • Offer at-home activities that allow children to learn through their senses as well as with paper-and-pencil work.

  • Set up a homework area and routine.

FEARSOME FACTS ABOUT YOUR FAST FOOD … WATCH THOSE NUGGETS

Did you know that the meat in one hamburger might have come from hundreds or even thousands of cows? Or that Chicken McNuggets have more fat per ounce than a hamburger?

These and other disturbing facts are in "Chew on This: Everything You Don't Want To Know About Fast Food," by Eric Schlosser and Charles Wilson (Houghton Mifflin; $16). Investigative journalist Schlosser also wrote the best-selling "Fast Food Nation" (2001).

This book, aimed at readers 11 and older, appeals to children's natural curiosity (and their fondness for being grossed out) by taking them through the raising and slaughtering of animals destined to become fast food. Kids also learn about the potential health consequences of eating the stuff.
