Stranded hikers rescued on North Shore

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Fire Department personnel tonight were bringing out 24 hikers who were stranded on the Kawainui Trail in Hale'iwa.

HFD Capt. Terry Seelig reported no injuries. The hiking group from Sierra Club left at 8:30 a.m. for a hike to a small swimming hole area but ran into trouble making one of the stream crossings due to rising water.

The group use a cellphone to call for help at about 5 p.m. HFD personnel from Rescue 2 and the Waialua station hiked in and found the hikers, who were brought out by helicopter. The last group was expected to be out by 10:30 p.m.

An engine company from Pearl City assisted.

Seelig cautions hikers to be aware of rainy weather in the higher mountain ranges, which may cause streams to rise.
