Musician sings praises of congressional candidate

State Sen. Gary Hooser, a candidate for the 2nd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House, has won the support of singer-activist and fellow Kaua'i resident Graham Nash.

"Gary Hooser is the real deal," said Nash in a statement issued from the Mainland, where he's on a concert tour for the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young "Living With War" album.

According to the press release from Hooser's campaign, Nash said, "I've watched him perform his duty with great attachment to the truth and, most especially, the welfare of his constituents."

Other 2nd Congressional candidates announced recent endorsements, awards and recognition:

  • State Rep. Brian Schatz was included among legislators who received a Conservation Innovation Award from the Hawai'i Conservation Alliance because of his leadership in developing and passing the Legacy Lands Act during the 2005 Legislative session.

  • Former Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono received an endorsement from the Hawai'i State Council of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

  • Former state Rep. Quentin Kawananakoa was featured in Roll Call, a Congressional news publication, in an article headlined "The Prince and the Paupers," which talked about his royal Hawaiian roots and his fundraising lead after putting $250,000 of his own money into his campaign fund.

    The Progressive Democrats of Hawai'i have begun posting responses to questionnaires sent to candidates in the 2nd Congressional District race.

    The answers from seven of 10 candidates in the Democratic primary were posted by Friday afternoon, as well as the answers from U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, who has won the group's endorsement.

    The nation's largest peace organization has endorsed Sen. Daniel Akaka in his re-election campaign for U.S. Senate.

    Peace Action, a merger of The Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy and the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign, recognized Akaka's fight against development of new nuclear weapons and his support for ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

    MEET WOMEN'S CAUCUS

    Candidates seeking endorsement from the Hawai'i Women's Political Caucus will be allowed to introduce themselves and their key issues during three-minute speeches at the group's annual membership meeting on Tuesday.

    The endorsements and recommendations will be based on responses to questionnaires and incumbents' past voting records. Female candidates are eligible for endorsements, while men may receive recommendations.
