HAWAI'I BRIEFS
24 hikers being flown off trail

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu Fire Department personnel last night were bringing out 24 hikers who were stranded on the Kawainui Trail in Hale'iwa.

HFD Capt. Terry Seelig reported no injuries.

The hiking group from the Sierra Club left at 8:30 a.m. for a hike to a small swimming hole area.

Seelig said they ran into trouble making it out when they couldn't get across a stream because of rising water.

The group used a cell phone to call for help at about 5 p.m.

HFD personnel from Rescue 2 and the Waialua station hiked in and found the hikers, who were brought out by helicopter.

The last group was expected to be out by 10:30 p.m.

An engine company from Pearl City assisted.

Seelig cautions hikers to be aware of rainy weather in the higher mountain ranges, which may cause streams to rise.

Yesterday's group had three cell phones but only one worked in the area.

WAIKIKI

CAT BURGLAR CAN'T ESCAPE VICTIMS

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary after climbing a fifth-story balcony, entering a locked hotel room and attempting to get away with a laptop computer, according to Honolulu police.

The man apparently entered a room at the Ala Moana Double Tree through locked sliding glass doors of a room balcony at about 5:20 a.m. yesterday.

A 22-year-old woman and her fiance were inside at the time, said police.

After attempting to steal a laptop, the man fled the room through the balcony and climbed to another balcony on the sixth floor.

The victim, her fiance and a witness helped apprehend the man and detained him until police arrived.

Police arrested the man without incident on suspicion of burglary.

Charges are pending.
