Waipio loses, 2-1, still in playoff hunt

Advertiser Staff

Marcus Yoshii tossed another outstanding game, but was the losing pitcher as unbeaten River Park (Calif.) beat Waipio, 2-1, today in a Little League Western Regional game in San Bernardino, Calif.

Yoshii, a lefthander, struck out 12 and allowed only two hits.

But one of the hits was a two-run homer by Trevor Crough with one out in the second.

In the opener on Friday, Yoshii lost 1-0.

Of the 15 outs recorded in today's game, only one left the infield. The other two were grounders back to Yoshii.

Waipio's run came on a second-inning, lead-off homer by Brian Iida.

Waipio had a chance to tie or win the game in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and third before the side was retired.

River Park of Fresno, Calif., the Northern California representative, is 4-0 in pool play.

Waipio is 2-2.

The top four teams advance to the semifinals on Thursday.

If teams are tied with the same won-lost record, tiebreakers will be decided by run differential.

But it has a run differential of plus 12, winning games 6-5 and 14-1 while losing games by 1-0 and 2-1 scores.
