1904: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports a proposal has been made that a highway be built on the Big Island between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, to connect Kona and Hilo.
1959: Acting Gov. Edward Johnston appeals to President Eisenhower for federal relief for Kaua'i after Hurricane Dot rakes the island with winds of more than 100 mph. Dot hit the island late on Aug. 6.
