Number of confiscated goods dropping fast

Travelers leaving from Honolulu International Airport yesterday learned very quickly what not to bring with them while passing through security checkpoints, said Scott Ishikawa, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

Wednesday night, the federal Transportation Security Administration revised its rules to prohibit airline passengers from carrying virtually any liquid with them aboard aircraft departing from U.S. airports. The new rule was put in place after British officials announced they had foiled an organized plot to blow up as many as 10 U.S.-bound aircraft by bringing liquid explosives aboard the airplanes in carry-on bags.

"By 10:30 a.m. yesterday, we had collected 1,000 pounds of the newly prohibited items," Ishikawa said. "Throughout the rest of the day, we collected another 500 pounds."

By the end of the day, the prohibited items had dwindled to a trickle, Ishikawa said.
