Kimberly Kim reaches U.S. Amateur semifinals

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Kimberly Kim defeated Eileen Vargas, 3 and 1, Friday to advance to the match play semifinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Kim, a former Big Island resident now living in Mesa, Ariz., will play Lindy Duncan of Plantation, Fla., on Saturday. Katharina Schallenberg of Germany faces Stacy Lewis of The Woodlands, Texas in the other semifinal. Lewis defeated Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko, 6 and 4, in the quarterfinals.

The 14-year-old Kim is the youngest remaining golfer in the tournament. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Sunday.

She was the runner up in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship earlier this summer.
