On Aug. 11, 1908, residents were warned water might be shut off if there was no rainfall in the next few days.

1909: The city and county has begun marking off locations in Manoa to place poles for new street lights for the district, The Advertiser reports.

1945: The United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Republic agree to accept Japan's surrender providing the supreme commanders of the allied powers rule Japan through the authority of the emperor. Mainland war workers in Hawai'i lined up outside the Matson Navigation Co. offices to purchase tickets back to the coast.

1957: The temperature hit 90 degrees at 1 p.m. at Honolulu Airport. At the time, it was the highest temperature in Honolulu in recorded history, The Advertiser reported.
