Kalani tops Utah, 10-3, in American Legion

Colby Ho went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs and Kalani scored four runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 10-3 victory over Taylorsville, Utah, in the opening game of the American Legion (19-under) Western Regional at Albuquerque, N.M.

Kalani, the Hawai'i champion, next faces Las Vegas, the Nevada champion, which beat Las Cruces, N.M., 8-6.

Marc Factora went 4 for 4 for Kalani. Gregory Hackler had a run-scoring triple, Ho and Preston Pires RBI doubles and Factora an RBI single in the first inning for Kalani. Ho added an RBI double in a two-run fourth and a two-run single in a three-run fifth.

Anthony Stovall, Toby Inouye and Micah Takahashi combined on a four-hitter for Kalani.

The double-elimination tourney continues through Monday.


FOOTBALL

MONDAY NIGHT GAMES WILL BE RE-RUN IN 2006

Monday Night Football games will be broadcast live at 2 p.m. and same-day delayed at 7 p.m. on ESPN this season for Oceanic Time Warner subscribers (Ch. 22/Dig. 222).

The first MNF game is a preseason contest Aug. 14 between the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings.

Other preseason broadcasts this month are Dallas Cowboys vs. New Orleans Saints (Aug. 21); Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Philadelphia Eagles (special, Fri., Aug. 25); Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals (Aug. 28).

This is the first year ESPN will be televising MNF games after a long run on ABC.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

DUGGINS, PRINCE LOSE IN PROFESSIONAL DEBUT

Lauren Duggins and Victoria Prince's pro beach volleyball debut lasted 44 minutes yesterday as they were ousted in the first round of qualifying at the $250,000 AVP Manhattan Beach Open in California.

Duggins and Prince, both former All-America middles for Hawai'i, were seeded 59th in the 61-team qualifier. They fell to No. 6 seeds Elsa Stegeman Binder and Ella Vakhidova, 21-13, 21-18.

Hedder Ilustre, another former Rainbow Wahine, was seeded 57th with partner Vivi Tran. They lost to eight seeds Cinta Preston and Beth Van Fleet, 21-14, 21-18.

UH KIDS' CLUB MEMBERSHIPS AVAILABLE

Beginning Aug. 21, the University of Hawai'i Kids' Club memberships will be available at all Papa John's Pizza Hawai'i stores on O'ahu.

The purchase of a large pizza at regular-menu price will earn one membership. Additional memberships are $10.

To be eligible, children must be in eighth grade or under.

Members will get to participate in activities at men's and women's events throughout the 2006-'07 academic year. Members will also receive a free T-shirt, Hanai Bear and special benefits from Blockbuster Video and the Fun Factory.
