Kimberly Kim reaches U.S. Amateur title match

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident now living in Arizona, defeated Lindy Duncan of Plantation, Fla., 1 up, to advance to the championship match of the U.S. Women's Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Kim, 14, will face Katharina Schallenberg, of Germany, in Sunday's 36-hole final. Shallenberg defeated Stacy Lewis of The Woodlands, Texas, on the 19th hole in the semifinals.

The match between Duncan and Kim was close throughout. Kim was able to take a 2-up lead after four holes, but Duncan took it to all square on the seventh hole. Duncan never led, but Kim never took more than a 1-up lead the rest of the way. The match ended when, with Kim 1-up, the golfers haved the par-518th hole with birdies.

Kim, who moved from Hilo earlier this year, was the runner-up at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links and was the youngest to make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open.

Schallenberg, 26, is playing in her first United States Golf Association event, but she has two International German Amateur Championships (2005 and 2006) and two German Match Play Championship titles (2005 and 2006).

The Women's Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted by the USGA. Ten are strictly for amateurs.
