An advertisement in the Aug. 13, 1898, Pacific Commercial Advertiser offered the opportunity to buy shares in several Hawai'i companies.

1927: Pablo Manlapit leaves Honolulu under prison parole, exiled for the remainder of the 10-year prison term he was serving in connection with the plantation strike of 1924. As he left aboard the City of Honolulu, he vowed to return.

1959: Ala Moana Center opens. It was reported more than 10,000 shoppers and spectators jammed the mall on opening day.

1969: The executive board of Church of the Crossroads says it will continue to provide sanctuary to AWOL servicemembers as a nonviolent form of protest. The church said it was providing moral support to men "who for conscience sake must resist what they believe to be the immoral activities of their own government" in Vietnam.
