The Aug. 14, 1908, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on resumption of work on the Nu'uanu Dam.

1945: Japan accepts the Allied surrender terms.

1948: The federal government announces that a new Pacific Ocean tidal wave warning system will be based at Barbers Point.

1949: Hawai'i's first drive-in theater opens on Kapi'olani Boulevard.

1950: One man is electrocuted on the Big Island when a tropical storm with winds of 55 to 60 miles an hour hits the Islands. After buffeting Hawai'i, the storm grew to hurricane strength as it was about 100 miles north of Kaua'i.

1954: Five workers are killed and two are injured when part of the Wilson tunnel collapses during construction.
