Big Island woman killed in car crash

Advertiser Staff

A 27-year-old Mountain View woman died today from injuries she received in a motor vehicle collision on Route 11 (Hawaii Belt Road).3 miles north of the 15 mile-marker.

Big Island police identified the victim as Teresa Jarrett Jacober.

Puna patrol officers were notified of the crash at 1:01 a.m. and determined that Jacober was heading north on Route 11 in a 1998 Ford four-door sedan when she lost control of her car, crossed the centerline, struck an embankment and overturned.

Police believe Jacober was ejected from her car and was then struck by a 1999 Mazda pickup truck traveling north. She was transported to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 4:34 a.m. The driver of the truck, a 63-year-old Mountain View man, was not injured.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are asking that a man who called 911 twice, and anyone else with information about this crash, call Officer Robert Pauole at 961-8889.

The Big Island has recorded 22 traffic fatalities so far this year, compared with 21 at this time last year.
